Online Mini Film Festival (from 2021)

JUST FOR YOU TO ENJOY AT HOME

The movie selections have been uploaded here to allow for those who couldn’t make it to Bend and Sip in 2021 to enjoy the show, so grab yourself some popcorn and a cosy blanket and settle in to dive deep into our big blue backyard for a series of ocean-inspired movies, all made by young NSW independent film makers and artists. Some as young as 4!

Firstly a short movie from Brodie Whalan

Brodie was 17 when he shot this short film. Born and grown in Ulladulla, Brodie is a year 12 Ulladulla High School Student. He shot this movie off the coast at Bawley Point, at the very northern tip of the Batemans Marine Park. His Pop took him out on his fishing boat to shoot, which is where his love for the ocean comes from, growing up and fishing with his grandparents, they are very proud of this film and Brodie’s passion to protect what they all love. Treading Lightly bought him the water housing for his camera to shoot the film because they knew he had a very important story to share and we wanted the voice of our young people to be heard. We are all sure Brodie will be a big name in ocean film making and conservation in the future!

MY SALTWATER SANCTUARY

From Byron Bay to Bateman's Bay, on the east coast of Australia, there is a vibrant ocean and beach culture, which is shared by all locals. Their joy, their livelihoods, and their local identity is intertwined with the ocean and ultimately on the future conservation of marine parks and sanctuaries, giving iconic species like the friendly Blue Groper a chance to replenish. This short documentary was produced & directed by James Sherwood & Danielle Ryan of Bluebottle Films for The Wilderness Society, The Nature Conservation Council & the Save Our Marine Life Alliance. This film is a part of an Australia-wide filming project documenting the science and the experiences of locals, who live beside marine reserves.

SEABIRDS

This is an exquisite and inspiring story that explores the lives of 25 ladies who swim in the ocean together everyday. (Not dissimilar from our own local 2546 Mermaids, the Numb-nuts and the Mullets!) No matter how much experience you’ve had at life it can be as unpredictable as the ocean. Pauline and Mina demonstrate that there’s always a hand of friendship that will find you and hold you when you least expect it. Side by side, or bum cheek to bum cheek, the SEA BIRDS have discovered that the cold water is unpleasant, that it’s hard to be pretentious when you’re in the nude and that in the middle of the ocean you just might find the freedom you’re searching for.

(*The Ocean Oscars of Ulladulla!)

Enjoy these three finalists from the primary section, the film-making competition was targeted at young people to create their own productions highlighting the importance of protecting marine sanctuaries. First is Archie Bartlett, then Maya Jarman and a family effort with Levi, Victor Esme! They are delightful and each last approx 2 mins :)

And now for the main event!

Marine sanctuaries on the NSW South Coast are under threat.

SANCTUARY documents their importance to the community and the environment and hears from the people setting their sights to save them.
