A Rare Find

One the pleasures of being on the Nature Coast Marine Group committee is being asked to identify finds people have photographed. Usually there is someone who knows or whom we can ask and we all learn something. Tristan Johnston sent us photos of a sea pen shell he found so we asked member, Wayne King, one of our shell experts. These bivalves are quite rare in our area.

The current situation

The Nature Coast Marine Group, along with associated conservation organisations, has been campaigning for the best part of a year to get full conservation status restored to six sanctuary zones in the Batemans Marine Park. Canopy forming macroalgae are declining globally due to climate change and the identification of refuges for these habitats is crucial for their conservation. This is particularly pertinent in ocean warming hotspots where significant range contractions of kelp have occurred and are projected to continue.
